LIVETHE BOX
THOUSANDS OF UNWANTED SHIPPING CONTAINERS REINVENTED INTO HOUSING AND OFFICE UNITS WITH FLOATING TERRACES
Thousands of unwanted shipping containers clog our ports and the land around them. AIA Newark challenges the nation's most innovative thinkers and designers to re-invent the box with their most inspired and creative utilizations of shipping containers as the primary construct of an urban multi-family mixed use project. So far so good. Here is our development proposal:
Different tracks are crossing the "Live the Box" competition site, just like the container's routes on the ocean. We emphasized these tracks to obtain the contours of the buildings, creating new structures where people are living, working, shopping or passing like on an ancient market place. The containers are reused for the housing/office units, the base of the "floating" terrace, the cut out sheeting as sun screen, lamellas on the facade, the pond, the relaxing plateaux and the wall panels in the parking area.
